Curse of the Busybody…

By Jane Tanfei|Jul 31 2012 | Rant, Thoughts

It seems like lately everywhere I look, there are blatant and ludicrous examples of U.S. politicians and citizens trying to control other people by any means necessary, usually criticism.

Politically motivated slander is common in newscasts, commercials, music, movies, books, social media sites, on billboards, even on the bumpers of personal vehicles.

Uninformed and unsolicited opinions bombard us everywhere we go. There is no room for moderate viewpoints, and no room for opposing viewpoints.

I’ve heard of mothers who tell their children, “We don’t like them because they’re not in OUR political party.” And then chastise the child for saying s/he hates people from the other political party.

Why is this acceptable? Why are we teaching our children to dislike anyone who thinks differently than we do? Why are we warping the minds of our children before they’ve ever made up their own minds?

I see so many people who refuse to take personal responsibility for their actions. They blame anyone else they can, including their children. Meanwhile, the number of children I see who are outright disrespectful and rude toward their parents and even strangers is appalling.

So many people are angry.

But, what are they angry at?

No, they aren’t angry about short jail sentences given child abusers, who are then released back into the community. They’re not angry about hypocritical behaviors of people in community leadership positions. They’re not angry that close to 35% of Americans are obese even though almost 16% of Americans are living in poverty. They’re not angry about the fact that the media ramps up violent and tragic stories to the point where most people believe the crime rate is at its peak, when it is actually at one of the lowest crime rates we’ve seen in recent history.

What are they angry about?

– Neighbors with beautiful and vibrant edible yards instead of well-trimmed grass.

– Police officers who crack down on local crime rates instead of focusing on federal crime.

– Harmless, clean, silly jokes and videos created with the assistance of local officials or workers.

– Parents who believe differently about: vaccinations, circumcision, breastfeeding vs. bottle-feeding, pre-school, religion, parenting type, etc.

– Neighbors letting children play outside in the evening.

– Parents who leave sleeping children in a locked house to take older children across the street to school.

– People who do not feel it is necessary to give a small child multiple electronics to silence them, because children can entertain themselves. And, I’ve also seen significant anger toward children who want to play instead of staring blankly into screens.

Why can’t we mind our own business?

Why can’t we see the forest for the trees?

Why are you so afraid?

Why can’t we just live and let live?

Now that I think about it, this is probably also why a record number of people are taking anti-depressant and anti-anxiety medications. We’re too worried about other people and not worried enough about our own lives and how our outward actions negatively affect others.

Get a life, people, and actually live it.

D:<

I’m going to go relax and forget about everyone else for a while. Life is entirely too short to be irritated about the ridiculous actions of ridiculous people.
