Non-Resolute Ideals for 2014

By Jane Tanfei|Dec 30 2013 | Thoughts, Writings

I’m not big on making resolutions. Realistically, this is because I can’t control anything other than what I do TODAY. Truthfully, I can’t control anything other than what I do THIS VERY SECOND.

So, I don’t like making resolutions, because I know I’ll fail in at least a few of them simply because I can’t foresee all possible external influences or events. I do, however, love making goals for myself. I like to have something to strive for. So, I start thinking about different things, and the things that make my heart skip a beat and cause my stomach to flutter become the things I want to strive to accomplish or gain.

I remember that my goal for 2012 was to live a “year of no fear”. Totally succeeded on that one. I’m not so clear on what my goals for 2013 were… But I did a bunch of stuff that I feel proud of: played live shows in multiple places, met some people that I can actually hold conversations with, sold stuff at a farmer’s market, made some toys by hand, learned to be a single mom, recognized the reality that I am the only one who will accomplish my goals, found peace with my body, learned to cook many great foods from scratch, learned to decrease dependence on processed foods, increased my garden’s production by about 1/4 from 2012, learned to budget my time and money more efficiently, bought myself some nice things without feeling guilty, learned to speak up for myself without feeling guilty, journaled an entire year.

2014 Goals to Strive For:

  1. Solidify plans for farm or homestead: take this beyond the “list of ideas” and actually form a basis for how I will accomplish this. This gives me heavy “butterflies”, people. This is my dream – to have a piece of land to call my own and to build into a wonderfully self-sustained home. I get googly and excitable thinking about it. The one thing that kind of makes me sad is that I don’t have anyone else to share this with, like no friend or family member to build this up with and make something with our own hands. But, I will do it myself eventually, I know I will. It will just take me a lot longer than if I had a tag-team to work with. I have two options:
    • a) Homestead – purchase a parcel of land and literally build a homestead (clear land, build cabin, dig well, etc). Pro: I can buy a parcel of 10-20 acres with cash within the year and work slowly to build what I want. Con: it would probably take 5-10 years before I could actually move to the land.
    • b) Small Farm – purchase a small parcel of land with a house already on it. Pro: House would be built and could move immediately. Con: I’d have to take a loan to purchase this and would have to spend 5-10 years paying that money back.

Things would be a lot simpler if someone would just give me a bunch of money or a piece of land. Money and time are my obstacles. Only when I can conquer both will I be able to focus on building my dream.

  2. Get my craft & textile business off the ground. I have a base for it, but I haven’t managed to focus enough time and effort to make a significant profit.
  3. Stop talking myself out of doing things I want to do by thinking, “Nobody wants what I have to offer.” and becoming discouraged.
  4. Make things happen. Follow through with ideas for helping friends/family with their goals.
  5. Continue to work on time & money management. I hate thinking about money, yet a lot of my time goes to “earning” money. It does not make me feel happy. Ideally, I’d never have to worry about money: I’d either be self-sustained or have so much money that it was no longer important. Realistically, that’s not going to happen anytime soon.
  6. Continue chronicling my thoughts and troubles so that I may get them outside of myself.
  7. Make it over to Europe somehow.
  8. Make it up to Canada to see my Oma.
  9. Find peace in my soul.

Happy New Year, my friend. May you be fulfilled and prosperous in the ways you need to be.
