What am I doing NOW?

By Jane Tanfei|Dec 13 2012 | Curiousity, Metaphysical Discussion, Psychology, Thoughts, Writings

I have been asking myself this question every time I realize that I am stuck in negative thoughts or when I feel my mood start to drop:

“What am I doing NOW?”

This is such a simple question, yet it focuses me like no amount of meditation or “becoming the observer” or “letting my emotions flow over me, accepting them as they are and letting them flow, like a river, into the abyss” could ever do. At this point, I’ve decided I would never make a good new ager. Mostly because all of that low pitched murmuring about “the cosmos in my toes” just makes me bored.

In contrast, when I ask myself what I am doing, I stop and think and focus on NOW. I let go of future worries that are clouding my mind. I let go of past hurts that are tugging at my heart. I let go of any arrogant or judgmental or angry or self-hating thoughts that may be ringing in my brain.

I just let go, without any effort.

I don’t know how this is so effective, but it has worked wonders for me since I figured it out. I was at work, having trouble concentrating on my tasks, and couldn’t remember what I was doing. I scribbled on a sticky note, ‘WHAT AM I DOING NOW?’ to try to jog my memory. I looked at that fluorescent yellow piece of paper and smiled. I immediately knew what I was supposed to be doing, I immediately forgot about those silly things that were keeping me so distracted. I was immediately able to focus on my job and focus on being here, in the moment.

We only have This Moment. If you think about it, we are time travelers. We travel through time every second of our lives, yet we are limited – we can only travel through time using This Moment as our vehicle.

Are you following me?

Now.

Now is the future of yesterday.

Now is the past of tomorrow.

Yesterday’s Now is a memory.

Tomorrow’s Now is imaginary.

All that exists, all that is tangible is Now.

You are Now. You are Here. You are Perfect.

You can make Now what you want it to be.

Now, what are you doing?
